Birrong Girls High School, located in Sydney's south west, was established as a single sex comprehensive high school in 1957. Culturally diverse (84% NESB), the 850 students enrolled in the school are from a range of cultural backgrounds which represent 46 language groups. The majority of families emerge from Chinese, Lebanese and Vietnamese backgrounds. Approximately 40% of enrolments are non-local. The school attracts students from many surrounding suburbs because it is single sex, because of its strong academic record and because of its reputation as a safe, caring and happy school. Unlike many of the local schools, it is not on the PSF program. The school has worked hard to maintain its academic performance and enjoys success in the High School Certificate as well as in state and national competitions. Particular emphasis is placed on citizenship, service and leadership. The motto, 'Ad Astra' (reaching for the stars), emphasises this school's high expectations for both teaching and learning.
