PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE Welcome to the web-site of Birrong Girls High School. Birrong Girls High School is a comprehensive secondary school committed to providing the best possible education for girls. Located in Sydney’s south west, it was established as a girls’ comprehensive high school in 1957. The school’s motto, ‘Ad Astra’ (reaching for the stars), emphasises our high expectations for teaching and learning. The focus is on quality learning for all in a safe, supportive and stimulating environment that fosters individual excellence and the achievement of personal goals The school encourages girls to be active participants in their learning and has worked hard to maintain its proud history of high academic performance and enjoys success in the Higher School Certificate as well as in state and national competitions. Particular emphasis is placed on citizenship, leadership and community involvement. There are approximately 60 full time teaching staff and 10 support staff. The teaching staff are highly experienced, many participate in HSC and SC marking, and share an ethos of ongoing improvement. Teachers utilise a range of stimulating, responsive and quality practices which challenge students to deepen their knowledge and understandings as well as develop higher order thinking skills. In 2006, there are 820 students from a wide variety of cultural backgrounds enrolled in the school. 84% of students are from non-English speaking background (NESB) which represents 46 language groups. The majority of families are from Arabic, Vietnamese, Chinese and Turkish backgrounds. There is an ongoing demand for enrolment from both local and non-local applicants because of the school’s reputation as a safe, caring and well-resourced school committed to the learning and growth of all its students as full and productive members of society and because it is a serious learning community with a strong academic record.
